The Chouk-Karjat Section Doubling Project has been approved at a cost of ₹497 crore. The 10.86-km section forms part of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat Route and is an important corridor for passenger and freight movement. Once completed, the doubling project will enable the operation of five additional passenger trains daily in both directions.
The project is also expected to increase freight-handling capacity by approximately 18.35 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA). It will also help reduce the detention of freight trains, improving movement along the section.
The second project is the 38.21-km Mukutban-Gadchandur New Rail Line on South Central Railway, approved at a cost of ₹493 crore. The line will connect Mukutban (Adilabad) with Gadchandur, both of which are important industrial and mining centres with cement plants, coal mines and limestone mines.
The new rail line will strengthen industrial connectivity while reducing pressure on the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section. It will also provide an alternative route for freight movement. After completion, the line will have the capacity to handle approximately 6.08 MTPA of freight traffic and operate two MEMU trains daily in both directions.
The route will facilitate transportation of commodities including coal, cement, sponge iron, metal scrap, iron & steel, fertilizers and food grains. More efficient rail connectivity will also be available to Jalna, Parbhani, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and other areas of Maharashtra and Karnataka through the Majri-Nanded route.
Together, the two approved projects are set to expand rail capacity for both passenger and freight movement, while strengthening connectivity across key industrial, mining and transport corridors in Maharashtra and Telangana.
